Model Identification
Each truck is identified by a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is located under the hood on a 2"X 3" plate located on the cowl on the passenger side of the truck.
A typical VIN would look like this: 5 CK 04 4321
The first digit identifies the manufacturing plant, see chart below.
The two letters indicate the model. See "Models"
The two digits that follow the letters identify the month of manufacture. 01=Jan, 02=Feb, etc. Note, however, that there were some differences in the later "BK". The Late 46 models used letters to identify the month, A=Jan, B=Feb, etc.
The last four digits is the production sequence number, which began with 1001 with each new model.
1) Manufacturing Plant Codes:
| 1 = Flint, MI | 2 = Tarrytown, NY | 3 = St. Louis, MO |
| 5 = Kansas City, KS | 6 = Oakland, CA | 8 = Atlanta, GA |
| 9 = Norwood, OH | 14 = Baltimore, MD | 20 = Los Angeles, CA |
| 21 = Janesville, WI |
It is not uncommon for the cowl identification to be lost over the years. In that event, the following features may help identify the model.
| 1941 Outside door lock in handle. Steering column painted black. Six planks in bed. Rear window frame die cast metal over rubber. Rubber gas tank grommet. |
1942 (later) Outside door lock on door. Leather gas tank grommet. Two piece headliner.
|
1946 Seven planks in bed. Steering column brown. Gas tank grommet is rubber. |
